AVR: 1120,800 canine checks in 2025; over 653,000 smuggled cigarettes seized in first half of 2026

In 2025, the Romanian Customs Authority's canine teams conducted over 120,800 inspections, uncovering significant amounts of smuggled goods. In the first half of the year, they seized more than 653,000 smuggled cigarettes, resulting in fines totaling 7.1 million lei. The AVR employs around 60 trained dogs specialized in detecting various illegal items. Their training occurs at a dedicated center near Bucharest, where they simulate real inspection scenarios. The center also trains teams from other institutions. The dogs serve for five to seven years, participating in educational events to raise awareness about drug prevention and financial education.
