The infections are linked to the Schwanheim area near the airport, particularly affecting airport employees. Authorities are investigating potential connections, as mosquitoes may travel on flights and transmit the disease. Malaria can be effectively treated if diagnosed early, but initial symptoms resemble flu or cold. The most dangerous form is tropical malaria, which can be fatal without prompt treatment. Malaria is not contagious between people and is transmitted through infected mosquito bites. Cases in airports are rare in Germany, with most malaria cases imported from endemic regions. Since 1969, 145 malaria cases have been recorded in Europe, with a significant portion classified as airport malaria, particularly in France, Belgium, and Germany.
