An international study indicates that pets, especially cats and dogs, may play a more significant role than farm animals in the spread of Acinetobacter baumannii, a dangerous antibiotic-resistant pathogen. Researchers found this bacterium in the brain tissue of dead embryos from chickens and ducks, but surprisingly, strains from these birds showed no significant antibiotic resistance. Genetic comparisons revealed that strains from pets were closely related to those infecting humans, with a genomic similarity exceeding 99%. Pets also carried resistance genes not found in farm animals, suggesting a potential zoonotic transmission. However, researchers emphasize that there is no direct evidence of transmission from pets to humans.
