Recent analysis indicates that the Russian army's advances in Ukraine have significantly slowed, with minimal territorial gains in July 2026. The total area captured was less than 40 square kilometers, a stark contrast to previous years. Ukrainian forces, however, have made gains in the Dnipropetrovsk region, continuing a trend from late 2025. The ISW's estimates highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Russian troops, who currently occupy just over 19% of Ukraine, with most gains occurring early in the conflict.
