Austria experienced its hottest summer in 2026, with temperatures averaging 2.6°C above the 1991-2020 period. Over 100 weather stations recorded new temperature highs, surpassing 41°C for the first time. The summer also saw a significant drop in rainfall, making it one of the driest in recorded history. Climatologist Alexander Orlik noted the extreme nature of this summer, highlighting the unusual number of hot days and the scarcity of frost days in mountainous areas. The first eight months of 2026 recorded the lowest precipitation levels since measurements began 169 years ago.
