Australia plans to build its first new oil refinery in over 60 years to enhance energy security, as announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The refinery aims to reduce vulnerability to global supply shocks and will be developed by Perdaman in Western Australia if feasible. The government will invest in a feasibility study to ensure the project's viability. Currently, Australia relies on imports for about 80% of its fuel needs, with only two operational refineries remaining after many closures in recent decades.
