New South Wales will implement a gun buyback program following the Bondi Beach shooting, aiming to enhance public safety and reduce firearm circulation. The initiative, announced by Premier Chris Minns, will start on November 2, offering compensation for affected firearms. A second phase is planned for 2027, targeting higher-value firearms. Authorities estimate the program could remove up to 274,000 guns from circulation. This marks the first state-level buyback scheme in Australia post-Bondi incident, which resulted in 15 deaths and numerous injuries.
