AUR's Peiu: Romania is third globally in terms of interest payments as share of total public expenditure

Petrisor Peiu, AUR Senate leader, highlights Romania's significant interest payments, ranking third globally in relation to public expenditure. In the first seven months of 2026, Romania's interest payments reached 40 billion lei, constituting 8.7% of total public spending. This marks an increase from 2025, where Romania had the ninth-highest share of interest payments. Comparatively, the US leads in total interest payments, followed by Italy and the UK. Peiu emphasizes the need to address the growing burden of interest on government debt, which places Romania among the countries with the highest expenditure on interest payments.
