The Alliance for the Union of Romanians has proposed a law to allow both iodized and non-iodized salt in stores, aiming to diversify consumer choices. The initiative seeks to remove the mandatory iodization of salt for human consumption and establish a clear framework for selling both types. Retailers would be required to offer both options and label them appropriately. Senator Ștefan Geamănu emphasizes the importance of consumer freedom in choosing salt types, citing health concerns related to excessive iodine intake. The project also includes regulations for iodine concentration control and penalties for non-compliance, ranging from 10,000 to 40,000 lei.
