August 2026 marked the hottest month ever recorded globally, with temperatures 1.65 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The average surface air temperature reached 16.96 degrees Celsius, surpassing the 1991-2020 average by 0.85 degrees. This month matched the record set in July 2023 and was the first since November 2025 to exceed 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. The summer of 2026 was also the hottest on record, tied with 2024. Severe drought affected much of Europe, including Romania, with low river flows reported. Additionally, sea surface temperatures reached a record 21.07 degrees Celsius, influenced by the intensifying El Niño phenomenon.
