A Dutch ecological project led to the unexpected return of a nearly extinct bird species, the whiskered tern, to the Markermeer lake. Engineers removed millions of cubic meters of sediment to create five islands, which have since become breeding grounds for various bird species. The first successful breeding of the whiskered tern in decades occurred in 2020, marking a significant milestone. However, sustaining this population long-term remains uncertain, as artificial habitats can be both beneficial and vulnerable to environmental changes.
