Erdoğan emphasized that this potential membership would not signify a break from NATO or the West. His statements followed his participation in an SCO summit in Shanghai, where he also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the Black Sea situation amid a grain crisis. Erdoğan highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of maritime transport in the Black Sea, especially after Russia's withdrawal from the grain initiative that allowed Ukraine to export grain. He called for a mechanism to address the grain crisis affecting not only Turkey but also Africa, while Russia expressed no intention to resume the grain agreement.
