Russia has officially withdrawn from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture, ending independent monitoring of its prisons. Răzvan Horațiu Radu, a member of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture from Romania, highlighted the negative impact on citizens deprived of liberty. He noted that although Russia denounced the convention in 2025, the effects were felt a year later. Despite being part of the convention, Russia had previously boycotted the committee's activities and failed to cooperate. Human rights activists have consistently reported widespread torture in Russian detention facilities, with many released Ukrainian prisoners of war recounting their experiences of torture.
