The issue of unauthorized off-road tourism affecting protected natural areas was discussed at a meeting of the Sibiu Territorial Authority for Public Order (ATOP). Despite Sibiu gendarmes issuing fines for unauthorized vehicle access in hunting grounds, they lack the authority to penalize violations in protected areas, which falls under the Environmental Guard's jurisdiction. ATOP is seeking solutions, including warning signs and surveillance cameras, to address the problem. The Environmental Guard acknowledges that fines for hunting law violations are minimal, while their own penalties are significantly higher. The meeting also explored the potential use of video footage for enforcement, but technical limitations exist. Romania is gaining popularity in the enduro tourism community, raising concerns about the impact of off-road activities on natural reserves.
