Researchers from MIT and USDA have developed a novel fish vaccination system using microscopic needles made from edible silk. This technology aims to reduce stress on fish, minimize worker risks, and lower vaccination costs in aquaculture. The small, water-resistant needles penetrate fish skin and dissolve to release vaccines. The study published in ACS Nano shows the system can deliver various substances, including bacterial and DNA vaccines. Traditional vaccination methods are labor-intensive and stressful for fish, while alternatives lack effectiveness. The new approach utilizes silk fibroin, which is safe for consumption and biodegradable. Researchers have also addressed challenges related to silk's solubility in water. The technology has been tested on rainbow trout, demonstrating its potential for small fish vaccination, which is crucial for their protection during early development stages. Further development is needed before widespread implementation.
