Historical documents reveal that Transylvania experienced harsh winters in the 17th century, contributing to famine and epidemics. A study analyzed hundreds of old records to reconstruct climate details from this period, known for its extreme cold during the Little Ice Age. Researchers collected 937 accounts from 68 locations, categorizing them by weather mentions and consequences like crop failures and rising food prices. They confirmed events through multiple sources and compared findings with physical evidence. The study identified 55 exceptionally harsh winters, with significant impacts on agriculture and public health, exacerbated by wars and political instability. Factors like low solar activity and volcanic eruptions may have contributed to regional cooling, but their exact influence remains unclear.
