The Italian government is cutting nearly 7,000 school positions due to declining birth rates, sparking protests from unions and opposition. The approved budget plan includes a reduction of 4,925 teaching and 2,049 non-teaching positions starting in the 2027-2028 school year. Additionally, a 75% cap on replacing retiring staff is expected to save the government 336 million euros by 2027-2028. These cuts follow previous reductions in the 2025 budget, which eliminated 5,660 teaching and 2,174 non-teaching positions.
