Mining Watch România reported that the Hunedoara County Inspectorate for Construction halted geological drilling by Gekko & Neka Invest S.R.L. in Stănija due to illegal authorization. The decision followed inspections prompted by complaints from local associations. Inspectors found that the construction permit was issued without necessary archaeological protection approvals. The company had already begun drilling in protected archaeological areas, leading to a fine of 70,000 lei. Despite this, the Hunedoara County Environmental Directorate later allowed the company to drill continuously, raising concerns about environmental and cultural heritage risks. Mining Watch plans to challenge this decision legally.
