A community in the Andes has survived for thousands of years drinking water with high arsenic levels. Researchers found genetic variants in locals that enhance their ability to detoxify arsenic. This adaptation suggests ongoing human evolution in response to environmental toxins. The study analyzed DNA from women in San Antonio de los Cobres, revealing that these individuals produce less toxic arsenic intermediates and more easily excreted forms. While this genetic adaptation offers some protection, it does not eliminate health risks associated with arsenic exposure. Similar research in Bangladesh indicates that such adaptations may occur in other populations as well.
