Romania may regain its status as a net electricity exporter and move closer to energy independence by next year, contingent on major hybrid projects and gas developments. Currently, the energy system faces significant challenges due to the shutdown of Cernavoda reactors and low water levels affecting hydroelectric production. The new gas plant at Mintia is expected to stabilize the system, while ambitious targets for new energy capacity have been set by the Energy Minister. However, the slow pace of grid connections poses a risk to achieving these goals. If the planned projects are completed on schedule, Romania could become a net exporter by 2027, but infrastructure improvements are crucial.
