His political rise is linked to Dumitru Buzatu, a former influential PSD figure recently implicated in a corruption case. Popică is also known as the son-in-law of Emil Savin, a local businessman who denounced Buzatu. Despite the controversy, Popică expressed emotional support for Buzatu, whom he regards as a father figure.
