The Foundation for the Defense of Citizens Against State Abuses is taking steps to uncover how much Romanians overpaid on bank loans due to artificial increases in the ROBOR index. While banks seek to suspend penalties imposed by the Competition Council in closed court sessions, affected citizens continue to bear the financial burden. For eight years, families were misled into believing that rising loan rates were due to market conditions, when in fact, ten banks coordinated their actions to manipulate the ROBOR index. The fines imposed on these banks benefit the state budget, with no compensation for the affected citizens. FACIAS is advocating for transparency in court proceedings and demanding public disclosure of the practices that led to the manipulated rates, aiming to help citizens recover their overpayments.
