The new EU taxes on low-value parcels from outside the bloc, particularly targeting Chinese platforms like Shein and Temu, could generate around 6 billion euros annually from 2028 to 2034. These measures aim to increase budget revenues and limit imports of cheap products that may not comply with EU regulations. In 2022, the EU saw a significant rise in low-value imports, prompting concerns over declared values to evade customs duties. Starting July 1, a 3-euro tax was introduced for small parcels, followed by an additional 2-euro tax in November. The revenue distribution is expected to allocate 90% to the EU budget and 10% to member states, although negotiations may alter these proportions. Affected platforms are adjusting their strategies, with Temu warning of significant impacts and Shein focusing on maintaining competitive prices. Additionally, a proposal aims to eliminate the "Temu tax" by November 2026, while supporting local heating initiatives.
