NATO has tested a 5G-based technology in Latvia for drone detection using existing mobile phone towers, eliminating the need for additional radar installations. This system analyzes radio signals reflected by drones, transforming telecom infrastructure into a sensor network for airspace monitoring. Conducted during the DiBaX 2026 exercise, the tests aimed to address military challenges such as maintaining troop mobility amid electronic warfare and protecting routes from drone attacks. Additionally, a secure communication channel utilizing commercial 5G was tested, along with the system's ability to switch between communication methods during interference. AI integration facilitated military information exchange across incompatible platforms, enhancing defense capabilities against drone threats.
