The Horea uprising, which began on November 2, 1784, marked a significant event in Transylvanian history, leading to severe repercussions for its leaders and participants. Horea, a carpenter from Râu Mare, emerged as a key figure advocating for the rights of serfs. The revolt was brutally suppressed, resulting in the execution of Horea and Cloșca, while many families were forcibly relocated across the Habsburg Empire. The aftermath prompted reforms from Emperor Joseph II aimed at improving the conditions of serfs, including the abolition of personal servitude. Despite the tragic outcomes, the uprising laid the groundwork for future changes in serfdom in Transylvania.
