Europe could face annual losses of up to 800 billion euros due to coastal erosion by the century's end without effective measures. A Council of Europe report suggests relocating homes and businesses from coastal areas to safer inland regions. Currently, economic losses from coastal erosion exceed one billion euros annually across 28 European countries, with over a quarter of the coastline affected. The report advocates for a planned retreat strategy, limiting new constructions in high-risk areas and gradually moving infrastructure to less vulnerable regions. Coastal areas contribute 40% to Europe's GDP, yet 80% of low-lying coastal zones are at risk. Rising sea levels and increasing storm intensity pose significant threats to these valuable coastal assets.
