Romania has officially become the poorest country in the EU, with Bulgaria surpassing it in average net salaries. The purchasing power of Romanians has been declining for 14 consecutive months, leading to reduced consumer spending and infrequent salary increases. Many citizens are relying on discounts to manage their budgets, while some have had to cut back on essential purchases. The economic situation worsened after the removal of electricity price caps and an increase in VAT, which further pressured prices. As a result, companies are experiencing lower sales and profits. The average net salary in Romania is now 1,065 euros, 5% less than Bulgaria's, and projections indicate that Bulgaria will also surpass Romania in minimum wage by 2027. The inflation rate continues to exceed estimates, exacerbating the financial strain on households, particularly affecting lower-income sectors.
