Lazăr Edeleanu, a Romanian chemist, revolutionized the oil refining industry with his method using liquid sulfur dioxide, enhancing fuel quality. Despite his significant contributions, he remains largely forgotten in Romania. Edeleanu's process, developed in the early 20th century, allowed for the extraction of aromatic hydrocarbons without altering their chemical structure, leading to cleaner fuels. He was also a pioneer in synthesizing amphetamines and held over 212 patents worldwide. After studying in Berlin, he returned to Romania, where he established a semi-industrial refining facility. Edeleanu's work gained international recognition, influencing major oil companies globally. He passed away in 1941, leaving a lasting legacy in chemistry.
