In California's White Mountains, the ancient Methuselah tree, a Great Basin bristlecone pine, is over 4,800 years old and its exact location is kept secret to prevent vandalism. Another unnamed tree in the area may be over 5,000 years old, making it the oldest verified living tree. The secrecy surrounding Methuselah's location has been maintained for decades, but recent online exposure has raised concerns about its protection. The importance of safeguarding historic trees has been highlighted following the intentional felling of the famous Sycamore Gap tree in the UK, which led to prison sentences for the perpetrators.
