Eugen Ionescu, a renowned playwright, faced constant scrutiny from the communist regime in Romania after leaving for France. The authorities attempted to lure him back by leveraging his fame and connections, particularly through friends like Radu Beligan. In the 1960s, after Ionescu expressed solidarity with dissidents, the regime shifted tactics, aiming to isolate him from opposition figures. Despite the annulment of his 1946 conviction, Ionescu remained wary of returning to Romania due to past experiences. The Securitate devised plans to influence him positively, involving cultural figures to gauge his political stance and encourage a visit to Romania, while also attempting to manipulate his family connections.
