In October 1977, a significant project aimed to transport icebergs from Antarctica to the Arabian Peninsula for fresh water supply was showcased at Iowa State University. Led by Saudi Prince Mohammed al-Faisal, the initiative gathered around 200 scientists from 18 countries to explore the feasibility of this ambitious idea. A demonstration involved transporting a large block of ice from Alaska to Iowa, highlighting the challenges of such an endeavor. Despite the initial enthusiasm and funding support, the project faced insurmountable obstacles, including ocean currents and melting rates. Although the idea resurfaced in 2017, it remains unimplemented, reflecting ongoing global water scarcity issues.
