A technology developed in Japan allows homes to temporarily lift above their foundations during earthquakes using compressed air. Known as AIR Danshin, this system has been in use since 2005 and aims to reduce seismic forces on structures. When seismic activity is detected, sensors activate the mechanism to introduce air between foundation components, lifting the house and minimizing ground movement impact. Although effective, it does not make homes earthquake-proof. As of May 2021, 227 homes were reported to be equipped with this technology, reflecting its ongoing application and research in vibration isolation.
