Bulgarian citizens are heading to the polls again to choose their president in a decisive runoff between interim President Iliana Yotova and former interim Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov. The first round saw a historic low voter turnout of 22.5%. Yotova received 34.8% of the votes, while Gyurov garnered 32%. The elections occur amid ongoing political instability, with eight parliamentary elections held since April 2021. If elected, Yotova would be the first female president of Bulgaria, while Gyurov, an economist and former deputy governor of the National Bank, is backed by opposition parties. The campaign has focused on Bulgaria's foreign policy direction, particularly regarding relations with Russia and Ukraine.
