Italian police have successfully recovered a stolen painting using an AI system designed to detect art theft. The painting, taken 20 years ago, was found at an antiques fair in Parma. Officers utilized AI to analyze images of artworks, leading to the identification of the piece, which had been altered to disguise its identity. The AI system, known as Swoads, has significantly improved the efficiency of art recovery efforts, allowing police to detect stolen items more quickly and accurately. Since its implementation, over 300 stolen artworks and numerous smaller items have been recovered, showcasing the potential of AI in combating art theft globally.
