Starting January 1, 2027, self-employed individuals in Romania can reduce their taxable income by saving for retirement in a special account. This new law allows them to deduct contributions made to a designated pension savings account from their taxable income, thus lowering their tax burden. Eligible individuals include those taxed under the real system, such as builders, electricians, and consultants. The funds must be deposited in a specific type of account, known as CEI-D, which allows for investment in various financial products. However, withdrawals from this account will incur a 10% tax. An alternative account, CEI-S, offers tax-free withdrawals but does not allow for initial deductions. Individuals must assess their options carefully, considering potential investment risks and tax implications.
