Astronomers have discovered a distant icy celestial object, 2026 ED138, which may qualify as a dwarf planet. Located about 46 times farther from the Sun than Earth, it has an estimated diameter between 600 and 1,500 kilometers. While it shows potential to meet the criteria for dwarf planet classification, further observations are needed to confirm its size and shape. The discovery was made using the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile, which is part of a collaborative project between U.S. scientific organizations. If confirmed, 2026 ED138 would join the five currently recognized dwarf planets in the Solar System.
