Two Chinese citizens were sentenced to 30 years in prison in California for espionage activities on behalf of Beijing. Liren Lai and Yuance Chen attempted to recruit U.S. military personnel and gather sensitive information about U.S. military operations. They organized cash deliveries in secret mailboxes in exchange for confidential national security information. The U.S. Justice Department emphasized the seriousness of their actions, warning that threats to national security will be met with justice. Lai, who entered the U.S. on a tourist visa, trained Chen, a permanent resident, in espionage techniques. Their activities began in May 2021 and ended with their arrest in June 2025.
