Student protests that began in France have spread to over 11 European countries due to rising rents, fuel prices, and budget cuts in public services. Many young protesters feel hopeless about achieving better financial situations than their parents, highlighting a significant wealth gap between generations. Data shows that households led by individuals under 35 have a median net wealth of about €25,000, while those led by individuals aged 55-64 hold around €208,000. The disparity is particularly pronounced in Finland, where young people own only 0.8% of household wealth. Rising housing costs are making it difficult for youth to afford homes, exacerbating feelings of inequality. Since 2000, consumer prices have increased by 67.2% in the eurozone, with Hungary experiencing the steepest rise, tripling prices. The inflation surge, particularly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has left lasting impacts on prices, despite a recent moderation in inflation rates.
