The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 5,000 deaths, with no effective treatments or vaccines available for the Bundibugyo strain. Delayed detection, conflicts, and overwhelmed medical services have accelerated the virus's spread. Eight out of 26 provinces are affected, with many fatalities occurring outside treatment centers. This outbreak is the second largest in history, following the 2014-2016 epidemic. Recently, Nigeria reported its first Ebola case, expanding the epidemic's reach into West Africa, alongside cases in East Africa.
