The European Commission has established the advisory group "preparEU" to enhance EU member states' preparedness for natural disasters and crises. This group will provide strategic advice to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Commissioner Hadja Lahbib. It aims to improve Europe's response to disaster risks, including extreme weather and wildfires. The group consists of 11 high-level experts with experience in civil protection and crisis management. They will assess existing capabilities within the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism and rescEU program, focusing on immediate and long-term impacts of disasters. The first meeting is set for early November 2026, with recommendations due by spring 2027.
