The EU's new taxes on small packages, primarily targeting Chinese platforms like Shein and Temu, could generate six billion euros annually from 2028 to 2034. This measure aims to curb the influx of low-cost goods from outside the EU, particularly from China. Starting November 1, an additional two-euro fee will be imposed on small packages, following a three-euro fee introduced in July. The European Commission anticipates a decrease in the number of low-value packages entering the EU as retailers adjust to these changes. The revenue generated will primarily support EU customs authorities, addressing long-standing underinvestment. Chinese e-commerce giants are already adapting, with AliExpress expanding local storage and Temu offering discounts to mitigate the impact on consumers.
