Novaia Gazeta, a historic bastion of independent journalism in Russia, announced its closure due to pressure from Putin and the FSB. The publication, which opposed Russia's offensive in Ukraine, will cease operations on October 30, 2026. Editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov stated that authorities forced the editorial team to stop working. The newspaper received an evacuation notice and lost its funding sources, leaving it without means of existence. The organization Reporters Without Borders condemned the ongoing harassment of Novaia Gazeta, highlighting the Kremlin's efforts to silence independent voices. The publication has faced significant restrictions since the onset of military censorship in February 2022.
