In September 2026, over 517,000 Romanians were unemployed, marking an increase of 26,200 compared to the previous year. Despite a slight decrease in the unemployment rate to 6.3% from August, the overall situation remains concerning, particularly for youth, with a staggering 30.8% unemployment rate among those aged 15-24. Women faced a higher unemployment rate of 6.5% compared to 6.2% for men. The data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) contrasts with figures from the National Agency for Employment (ANOFM), which reported 256,480 registered unemployed. The differences arise from the distinct methodologies used by the two institutions, with INS relying on statistical surveys while ANOFM counts officially registered individuals.
