A recent South Korean study revealed that paper straws may be more harmful to the environment than plastic ones, raising concerns about the country's efforts to replace plastic. The research, commissioned by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, found that standard plastic straws had a lower environmental impact in most categories. Paper straws showed a cancer risk impact over six times greater than plastic straws and doubled the acidification impact. Additionally, paper straws are rarely recycled due to their size and the waterproofing substances used. Public sentiment leans towards plastic straws, with 87.5% of surveyed South Koreans preferring them. Reusable stainless steel or silicone straws are suggested as alternatives.
