The Romanian Minister of National Defense, Ștefan-Radu Oprea, announced an investigation into the General Directorate for Armaments regarding military procurement payments. This follows a loan of €16.68 billion under the European SAFE program. Oprea revealed that decisions on military equipment were made without consulting the Ministry of Defense. The investigation will assess if the specifications for military equipment align with the requested characteristics and verify the accuracy of publicized payment amounts. Reports indicate that approximately 6.6 billion lei have already been paid, with a significant portion going to Rheinmetall. The European Commission confirmed Romania received its first SAFE payment of €2.5 billion.
