The Romanian Minister of National Defense, Ștefan-Radu Oprea, has initiated an investigation into the General Directorate for Armaments regarding military procurement payments linked to the SAFE program. This program involves a €16.68 billion loan, with approximately €650 million already paid to the German company Rheinmetall. The checks will focus on the allocation of funds and the contracts signed with various suppliers. The investigation is significant as it concerns public debt incurred through military acquisitions, which will impact the national budget. General Ion-Cornel Pleșa leads the Directorate and has been involved in key contracts and parliamentary hearings related to SAFE.
