Patients in Romania face a staggering wait of 1,201 days for new medications, compared to just 56 days in Germany. Emer Cooke, the Executive Director of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), emphasized the need for greater collaboration among EU member states to address these disparities. While EU-wide drug authorizations exist, the responsibility for healthcare systems lies with individual countries. Cooke highlighted that the new pharmaceutical legislation aims to tackle these inequalities by encouraging joint procurement among nations. Despite the common authorization system, significant delays persist in access to innovative treatments, particularly in Eastern Europe, raising concerns about equitable healthcare across the EU.
