A South Korean prosecutor has requested the death penalty for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is appealing a life sentence. Yoon was impeached in December 2024 and officially removed from office in April 2025. He faces charges for illegally mobilizing troops and police to consolidate power and suppress opposition. The Central District Court sentenced him to life imprisonment in February 2026, but prosecutors argue he deserves the death penalty. South Korea has not executed anyone since 1997, maintaining a moratorium on capital punishment. Yoon's defense claims his actions were a response to North Korean provocations.
