Romania's budget deficit for 2024 reached a historic 32 billion euros, marking 9.3% of GDP. The Court of Accounts confirmed this figure, highlighting the country's alarming financial situation within the EU. The deficit is attributed mainly to rising interest payments on public debt, massive additional expenditures through the Reserve Fund, and increased state apparatus costs. Despite high spending, revenue collection remains low, with only 34.1% of GDP, placing Romania near the bottom in the EU. The report also criticized accounting practices that inflated revenue figures without real backing, exacerbating the budget gap.
