The Finnish police have launched a criminal investigation into alleged environmental law violations at a planned Google data center site. This project is part of Alphabet's recent $15 billion investment in AI infrastructure in Finland. Authorities reported that Tuike Finland, a Google subsidiary, conducted deforestation and drainage work before completing required environmental impact assessments. The police stated that there were uncertainties regarding drainage and water management at the site. On October 6, Finland's Environmental Agency ordered Google to halt preparatory measures affecting the environment. Google claimed it began work based on its interpretation of necessary permits. Finland's cool climate and low-carbon energy have made it a prime location for data center investments.
